NEWSLETTER – JULY 2020

Time to renew your CLIMB-BIG-DATA licence

CLIMB-BIG-DATA Primary User licence is due for renewal at the end of this month (July 2020). If you haven’t done it yet, there’s still time to renew your licence using this form: https://forms.gle/5RaNNp2B2ediQuBj6.

Please always remember to terminate your VMs if you have finished using them.

Downtime in Cardiff

We have undertaken power works in Cardiff, and CLIMB-BIG-DATA had been switched off for the weekend of 17-19 July 2020. All VMs in Cardiff had been shelved, and all users should be able to unshelve their VMs as required.

A second downtime will be coming next week when CLIMB-BIG-DATA new equipment will be installed.

If you are experiencing any issue, please post about it on our community forum (https://discourse.climb.ac.uk)

We are hiring!

We’re looking for a cloud-computing manager at the University of Warwick. It’s a great opportunity to join our team and the CLIMB-BIG-DATA OpenStack cloud-computing infrastructure!

Should you know someone who might be interested, please feel free to circulate this announcement.

GVL and security concerns

Hacking attacks on UK computing infrastructure are on the increase, including sites supporting COVID-19 efforts. There is an urgent need to do away with the GVL/Galaxy set-up on new VMs because of security concerns, so please be aware that we are discontinuing GVL: we will no longer offer GVL VMs and will soon stop proving assistance on existing GVL VMs. Instead, we will provide new users with VMs running Ubuntu.

Have 3 minutes to help us improve?

We would be very grateful if you can answer a few questions about your experience, interests and intended use of CLIMB-BIG-DATA. This will help us to tailor the infrastructure to you. The questionnaire is available here: https://forms.gle/Ld47AZ5afnuT7e6s8.

See you next month!
